What is ride sharing?

carpoolers

Ride sharing is the shared use of a car or van by the driver and one or more passengers, usually for a commute to work. It’s the most common alternative to driving alone in Central Virginia and the most flexible. Sharing the ride gets people out of single occupancy vehicles. This reduces congestion on our highways as well as reduces our impact on the environment.

RideShare is a free commuter matching service available to anyone who lives, works or attends school in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa or Nelson. Interested commuters who register with RideShare are sent a personalized match list of commuters who go the same direction at approximately the same time of day. There is no obligation to form or join a carpool. To register, call us at (434) 295-6165, or fill out our online registration form. Please note that RideShare does not sell, share, or trade the information you provide.

Matching services provided by RideShare include:

  • Carpool – Sharing a ride to work with people who have a similar commute
  • Vanpool – A company provided or leased van is used for larger groups
  • Schoolpool –  Parents sharing rides to and from the same school

RideShare serves those looking to share a ride on their regular commutes to work or school. Looking for a one-time ride? Consider using transit. Or consider one of the following services:

  • Charlottesville Craigslist: If you're in the Charlottesville area, particularly a student, Craiglist is a good place to begin your search for an out of town ride. Craigslist is a national free classifieds service.
  • Home Ride of Virginia: Provides weekend and holiday bus service from Radford University, Virginia Tech, James Madison University, and the University of Virginia to Northern Virginia, Richmond, Hampton, Harrisonburg, and Charlottesville.
  • Amtrak: Offers routes to major cities from Charlottesville. Book a trip online or call (434) 296-4559 for more information.
  • Greyhound: The largest North American intercity bus company also has routes from Charlottesville. Book a trip online or call (434) 295-5131 for more information.
  • GoLoco on Facebook: If you use Facebook and are looking for other ways to connect with local commuters for one-time, long distance, or other rideshare applications, consider adding the GoLoco application to your profile. GoLoco uses the power of Facebook's social networking technology and its own route matching software to connect you with commuters who share your route.
